Sedimentary Stones should be laid horizontal
These rules of stone masonry and stone joints come from the period when the stone was the most favored material in construction. The very first rule says that sedimentary stones should be laid horizontal. This is done to ensure the safety of the construction.
Sedimentary stones refer to those types of rocks that are formed after the deposition of the material that is present on the earth’s surface and those present in water. It is after the pressure on these materials that they are made compact and become a solidly held body called sedimentary rocks.
These are relatively weak and can’t hold together if they are used vertically in the construction. Usually, these are sandstones and limestones that have horizontal natural bedding plans. If they are kept vertical, then their natural cleft face is exposed and that is not safe.
Be careful about the stone arrangement
The length and height of the stone matter. If a stone is laid on the side where the length is greater than the height, then it is fine. If it is laid in a position where height is greater than the length, then it might cause problems. So, it must be ensured that the stone is placed in the position that the length of it is greater than the height.
Joints: Avoid Running or Block Joints
When constructing a wall from stone, it should be ensured that running or block joints should be avoided in vertical cases. In case there is no other way, they should be made at the one side of the stone. Doing it on both sides of the stone vertically is not safe for your wall. Ensure that safety comes first.

Risers are also named jumpers. These are the stones that are present in horizontal beds. These stones are square or almost square in appearance. Their length must necessarily be three times their height. These stones form the bulk of the wall and have an important role in the strength of the wall.
The main tip about riser is that no more than three stones should be set against a riser. If this is done, that might weaken the wall and that might cause harm to your property.
Risers should never touch but in specific conditions
If there are many risers in the wall, then they should be evenly distributed and never laid together. If like-sized stones are placed together then these are not good for the strength of the wall. In case there is a load on the wall, it might not be able to bear and might collapse.
Even it won’t be able to bear its load and can crack in the few months after it is built. So, ensure that the strength of the wall is never compromised.
The tip about the length of horizontal joints
If there are stones of the same height and length, then they shouldn’t be put on each other to ensure that the strength remains good. If this rule isn’t followed it causes stepping which is not good for the strength of the wall.
Lining Up vertical joints in alternate courses
If there are stones arranged in a vertical fashion, then ensure that they are not lined in alternate courses. This makes the wall too much regular and compromises the overall appearance of the wall. Ensure that there is some variety to ensure adding liveliness to the wall.
